For today’s post, I thought I would share with you some very effective home remedies for Yeast Infection.
Yeast infections are super common and don’t just affect women. Yes, men can get yeast infections, too. The good news is that guys don’t need any special medication, the same things that work for women will work for us.
So let’s get into it and get you over this problem!
What Is A Yeast Infection
A yeast infection (medically known as Candidiasis) is a condition where the candida yeast that is naturally found in the body, grows more than it should.
It was long believed that only women could get yeast infections but this isn’t the case. Men can get them just the same.
When you hear “yeast infection”, the common thought is vaginal candidiasis but it can also affect the mouth. Oral yeast infections (also called Thrush) are less common but still affect a lot of people’s lives.
Yeast Infection Causes
The Candida microorganism (which is a fungus, but a good one, really!) is always around in the body and 9 times out of 10, is a friendly little organism that goes about its business.
There is also another microorganism called Lactobacillus which, again, is naturally occurring and harmless.
Lactobacillus’ job is to make sure that our ol’ buddy Candida doesn’t grow too much and cause a problem.
So you might think the blame lies with Lactobacillus for not doing his job, right? Well, yes and no.
If left alone in a perfect body, eating a super healthy diet and living a great lifestyle, the balance would be preserved.
In this day and age, with our sugars, bread, chemical antibiotics and stress, we do more damage than Lactobacillus can repair.
Sometimes it’s because of things like a hormonal imbalance or by getting pregnant. These are just life situations.
Here’s a list of things that can cause a yeast infection:
- Bad Diet
- Antibiotics (chemical from a doctor or over the counter)
- Lack Of Proper Sleep
- Compromised Immune System
- Tight Clothing/Underwear/Jeans
- Scented Products (even the ones marketed as feminine hygiene)
- Being Overweight
While the majority of these things apply to women, guys should take note too. Tight jeans (which is a fashion right now for some reason) are a bad idea.
The rest of the list, sleep, diet, etc apply to us, too.
How Long Does A Yeast Infection Last
This depends on how bad the infection is and what you do about it. If it’s left alone and not treated, it can take weeks to clear up.
If you make no changes to your life then chances are you will either get another one right after or you will just keep prolonging the problem.
A mild infection can be gone in a few days if you make the right changes and treat it properly. If it’s more severe, it will take a bit longer but generally, it can be gone in a week.
Is A Yeast Infection Contagious?
This is normally asked along with the question “Is A Yeast Infection An STD???” and the answer to both is NO.
If you have unprotected sex with someone who has an infection, you “might” develop one of your very own (lucky, eh?) but this is more likely due to living the same kind of lifestyle and eating the same kind of foods rather than a contraction.
Yeast Infection In Men
Let’s start with the good news… We are much less likely to get a yeast infection than women. While this might be a cause to celebrate, we’re not immune and we can get them, just not as often or easily.
Science is still out when it comes to the frequency of men and Thrush so it’s not known if we get them more or less easily than women.
Like I said above though, if you don’t pay attention to the things on the list, you can also get a yeast infection.
During my research, I found that medical science really doesn’t know too much about yeast infections in men. It’s something that doesn’t seem to have had much time and effort put into it. I’m guessing it’s because men are less inclined to go to a doctor so big pharma wouldn’t make as much money from them.
There is quite a bit of information on thrush in men but not in genital yeast infections. I’m going to take that as a good sign and say that we get them so little that they haven’t bothered to study it.
They will try to sell you some cream for it though, they’re not THAT much in the dark about the condition 😛
Why You Shouldn’t Use Antibiotics
Chemical antibiotics also attack the good bacteria which then leads to other imbalances in the system such as a weakened immune system. Which leads to other infections, which is treated with antibiotics… See the pattern?
Do Not Douche
I have noticed quite a few sites on holistic and home remedies say to douche. In theory, a douche of antifungal herbs such as Teatree (Melaleuca alternifolia), Lavender (Lavendula angustifolia) or Chamomile (Matricaria chamomilla) would kill off the fungus.
The problem I have with recommending this is that you could be pushing the fungus further into the vagina and possibly into the uterus.
If this occurs, you are going to have a much bigger problem than you previously had and it’s possible that you will end up with a doctor poking around.
My advice is to stick to these home remedies for yeast infection and stop the problem before it gets worse.
Home Remedies For Yeast Infection / Yeast Infection Treatment
Herbal Teas For Candida:
These herbal teas will work for yeast infections in men and women so no matter what equipment you’re having trouble with, these teas will help calm it down.
Drink a few cups a day and wash regularly and you will start to see an improvement really soon.
Ok, this one isn’t a tea exactly but it has a lot of antifungal properties that will help to clear up your candida and balance your system again.
There are tons of recipes out there for Golden Milk but mine has a slight difference when it comes to antifungal application.
- 3 cups of Coconut Milk
- 1/2 inch of fresh Ginger Root
- 1 Cinnamon Stick
- 1 1/2 tsp of Turmeric
- A Touch Of Black Pepper (called for in the original but has no effect on this application so pepper or not, up to your tastes)
- Honey To taste (important for taste and also its properties)
If you can’t get Coconut milk, you can use any other plant milk and then add Coconut oil. You would want to use 1 to 1 1/2 Tbsp.
Real simple. In a small saucepan, add everything apart from the honey.
Whisk or stir it over medium heat for 10 minutes. DO NOT BOIL. You are warming it and letting it infuse.
If you are using Ground Ginger (1 1/2) instead of fresh, you only need to simmer the milk for 4-5 minutes.
When its been simmering for the right amount of time, pull out the ginger. Pour the tea into a mug, add honey and enjoy.
Drink a mug a few times a day. It’s especially good in the winter as a bedtime drink!
Warning: Because Turmeric and Ginger have blood-thinning properties, be careful drinking it if you are on blood-thinning medications or have high blood pressure.
Thyme, Sage, And Fennel Tea for Yeast Infections :
For this tea, you probably have everything in the kitchen cupboard already.
Each herb has really good antifungal properties that will help keep the candida in check from the inside.
You can also use this as a wash, in a sitz bath or an ordinary bath, too.
You will want to up the amount of herb used or my advice would be to use essential oils as they are WAY stronger.
I’ve written before about How To Make Herbal Tea so use the methods listed there to help get you going on your healing journey!
- 1 tsp Thyme (Thymus vulgaris)
- 1 tsp Fennel Seed (Foeniculum vulgare)
- 1 tsp Sage (Salvia officinalis)
- For the tea, follow the instructions in How To Make Herbal Tea.
Drink and enjoy.
Orange And Cranberry:
Both of these fruits have antifungal properties that can help to get rid of the candida flare-up.
They are also packed with other beneficial nutrients and minerals that your body will use to get your system back in balance.
Just mix the two juices together and drink. This is probably the easiest remedy on this list.
Black Walnut (Juglans nigra) Super Plant For Fighting Yeast Infections!
Black Walnut tea is one of the more well known herbal home remedies for yeast infections. It is very helpful to clear up candida and stop the other nasty symptoms.
If you get yeast infections often (keep reading for ways to fix that), you might want to pick up a bulk load of Black Walnut, otherwise, you can find ready-made tea bags online.
I would suggest this as its easier and cheaper than making tea from the bulk herb.
The taste is similar to green tea, earthy and “heavy” but not hard to drink.
If the taste isn’t doing it for you, you can always add another herb from the list.
Tarragon Yeast Infection Killer:
Another herb you might have in the kitchen spice cupboard. Tarragon has antifungal properties that can help deal with Candida.
You can use any of these herbs as Simples but I would recommend putting a few together in this case.
With Tarragon, I would mix it with Sage and Thyme, because the flavors are complimentary and they are all great herbs to use for yeast infections.
Tinctures And Supplements For Yeast Infections:
Tinctures are always good to use because they are a more powerful concentration of the herb and they are easier to use than making teas.
The good thing is, you can also add tinctures to tea so if you wanted to make tea from Thyme for example and you had Calendula, you just add the dose of the tincture to your mug with your Thyme tea.
Calendula (Calendula officinalis):
Calendula is not just a beautiful looking flower, it is also an excellent antifungal.
The easiest way to use Calendula is in tincture form which you can find in any good health shop.
Geranium (Pelargonium graveolens):
Geranium is another great looking and very using plant tincture to have around.
Like everything else in this article, they have more than just one use.
Geranium is another plant I would suggest getting as a tincture or an essential oil which we’ll talk about next.
We will be talking about food in a minute but I wanted to add garlic supplements here.
If you work around people, you might not want to walk around with garlic breath. This is where supplements can help.
Garlic is a very powerful antifungal and natural antibiotic that will put balance back into your system.
Essential Oils As Yeast Infection Treatment:
So let’s take a look at how you can use essential oils to help clear up the Candida.
We’ll be using these mainly in the next section on Baths And Washes but I thought it would be a good idea to give you a list of EO’s that you can reference quickly.
These are in no particular order so use any you have on hand.
- Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia)
- Tea Tree (Melaleuca alternifolia)
- Orange (Citrus X sinensis)
- Cinnamon (Cinnamomum verum)
- Clove (Syzygium Aromaticum)
- Geranium (Pelargonium)
- Thyme (Thymus vulgari)
- Oregano (Origanum vulgare)
- Lemmongrass (Cymbopogon flexuosus)
When you’re buying and using essential oils, always use the botanical (the Latin name in brackets) as common names can change between areas and countries. You want to make sure you’re getting 100% of the correct plant, not a blend.
Garlic Oil – One of The Best Home Remedies For Yeast Infection:
While not an essential oil, I wanted to add this here as it is a VERY useful recipe that will come up time and time again on this blog.
To make Garlic oil, you take 1 clove of garlic in a small glass container. This can be a food storage bowl that usually comes with a lid, an oil bottle for salads or even an empty sauce jar.
Before you begin, make sure that your container is well washed, sterilized and smells of nothing at all, not even soap.
Take the Garlic clove and gently crush it. I normally put it on a cutting board, place the glass container on top and press down until the clove splits open
Put 1/2 cup of Olive oil and the clove into the container. Cover with a lid or plastic wrap and leave in a warm, dark place. I put it in the spice cupboard above the counter in the kitchen.
After 2 hours or so, take it out and check its strength. It should have a Garlic smell but not overpowering… It’s hard to describe. It’s now ready for use.
This oil can be stored for a day, then you will remove the clove and store the oil. Dilute this oil for use as the longer you leave it, the stronger it will get.
In the case of yeast infections, you will want to dilute the oil quite a bit so that it doesn’t burn the skin. You can then use it to rub on your lady parts to kill the infection.
Herbal Oils Are A Great Home Remedy For Yeast Infection:
Some people say that you can take essential oils internally but I don’t have enough experience with them to comfortably suggest this to you.
I have taken a few basic courses on essential oils but I haven’t studied it in depth.
There is a way that I would suggest though and that is to make a “massage” oil.
Any of the oils listed can be used to do this and I would use Coconut oil as a base as Coconut is an excellent antifungal in its own right.
Use 4oz of Coconut oil to 3 drops of the herb of choice.
Lavender, Tea Tree, and Chamomile is a common recipe. You can use up to 5 drops of each but unless you know how your body will handle it, I would start with 2-3 drops of each and increase if you feel it necessary.
Baths And Washes, A Helpful Home Remedy For Yeast Infection:
Just like the tea recipes above, you can use the same herbs for a bath or a wash.
If you are using an ordinary bath, you will want to use essential oils for this as making a strong enough solution to fill a bathtub would take a lot of herbs.
For a wash, use the same recipe as the tea but leave it to steep until it is warm enough to wash with.
For a Sitz bath, I would use 2-3tsp of herbs and 3 times the amount of water.
Leave it to steep longer so that you get a stronger solution to use.
You can always dilute this a little more if you need more warm water in the bath. This will work for yeast infections in men, too.
You can also make the bathwater with essential oils instead of the herbs if you have the oils on hand. Either method will work.
Lifestyle And Diet Changes
So, this is where we really tackle the problem. The herbal home remedies for yeast infection I have listed in this article will clear up the problem, but it will just come back again if you don’t address the root cause.
Way back at the beginning, I listed the common causes of a yeast infection (I know, it seems like ages ago, right?). So let’s take an example and see what we can do.
Our fictional patient Sarah has a yeast infection that keeps coming back, even though she is using the herbal teas and washes.
She lives on a diet of soda and sandwiches because she is always on the go and never has time to sit down and eat.
Because of her diet, she is feeding the yeast with sugar and more yeast. If you have ever made bread, you will be familiar with adding sugar to the yeast to make it rise. This is the exact same situation with a yeast infection. It’s yeast.
Sarah needs to relax a bit more and change up her diet. Kick the soda and drink water (flavored is fine as long as it doesn’t contain sugar) and eat flatbreads instead as they generally don’t contain yeast.
Making these dietary changes along with treating the symptoms will get you over the infection and you will be way less likely to get another one.
Foods To Avoid:
- Yeast (bread)
- Milk and some other dairy
- Glutenous foods such as pasta
- Beers and alcohol fermented with yeast
So avoiding these will go a long way to helping you get over your infection.
You can eat rice, quinoa and all the veggies you can handle. To help you out a lot, if you can get garlic into your food, that will help fight the infection.
Some people also suggest yogurt but I have no experience with it working. The same people say to avoid fruits because of the sugars, I have no experience with this being good or bad so I would say its a personal thing. Do what your body wants you to do.
Herbal home remedies can only do so much to treat a yeast infection. You can take all the home remedies for yeast infection but without addressing the root cause, you will be dealing with the infection fo a much longer time.
I focused mostly on vaginal yeast infections because they are the most common but the same applies to guys. If you have a yeast infection on your tackle, wash with the herbal washes, drink the teas and make the dietary changes.
For a yeast infection in the mouth, you can use the same teas and oil pulling with coconut oil will work too.
It’s important with the oil pulling not to swallow, especially if you’re using essential oils in the oil.
Change up your diet, sip the teas and you will soon be feeling much better. If you have any doubts or if it isn’t clearing up in a week, you might have something else and not a yeast infection. In that case, a trip to the doc to get a diagnosis is going to have to happen, sorry!
Take care of yourself and I’ll catch you in the next one!
